Danfoss VLT Series Comparison: FC51, FC102, FC202, FC302 Explained
Danfoss VLT drives are among the most widely installed VFDs in Indian industry, but the four main series — FC51, FC102, FC202, and FC302 — are not interchangeable. Each is engineered for a specific application domain, and specifying the wrong series means either paying for features you don't need or missing features that would have saved your motor.
VLT Micro Drive FC51 — The Cost-Optimised General Purpose Drive
The FC51 is Danfoss's entry-level, cost-optimised drive for fans, pumps, and general machinery up to 22 kW (at 415 V). It covers basic speed control with a small footprint, simple setup, and a low price point. If your application is a simple fan or pump with no special requirements — no fieldbus, no advanced protection, no pump-specific features — the FC51 delivers good reliability at the lowest cost.
- Power range: 0.18–22 kW (three-phase 380–480 V)
- Key features: basic V/Hz control, graphical LCP keypad, Modbus RTU as standard
- Best for: simple fan and pump speed control, OEM machine builders wanting low-cost drives
- Not ideal for: demanding applications, fieldbus other than Modbus, high ambient temperature
VLT HVAC Drive FC102 — Built for HVAC Fans and Pumps
The FC102 is optimised for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and building services applications. It has built-in PID control for temperature or pressure regulation, a sleep-wake function for overnight setback, fire mode override, and energy-optimisation algorithms tuned for variable-torque loads. The FC102 is available with anti-condensation heating and with IP54/66 options for outdoor AHUs.
- Power range: 0.25–90 kW (three-phase 380–480 V)
- Key features: built-in PID, sleep/wake, fire mode, cascade pump control, BACnet/Modbus
- Best for: AHU fans, cooling tower fans, chilled water pumps, condenser water pumps
- Not ideal for: general industrial loads, applications needing torque control
VLT AQUA Drive FC202 — Purpose-Built for Water and Wastewater
The FC202 is engineered for water utilities, irrigation, and wastewater treatment. It adds dry-run protection (runs a voltage-test routine to detect loss of suction before the pump cavitates), end-of-curve detection (detects if the pump has run off its curve), and pump degassing mode (removes air pockets on restart). The drive's internals are coated to resist the high-humidity, chemically aggressive environments common in water plants.
- Power range: 0.25–1.4 MW (available in high-power versions)
- Key features: dry-run protection, end-of-curve detection, degassing, short-circuit pipe detection, multipump control
- Best for: clean-water pumping, wastewater treatment, irrigation booster stations, ETP
- Not ideal for: non-pump loads
VLT AutomationDrive FC302 — The Full-Featured Industrial Drive
The FC302 is Danfoss's flagship industrial VFD. It supports both variable-torque and constant-torque loads, with closed-loop flux vector control (with encoder) for demanding applications. The FC302 supports every major fieldbus via option cards: Profibus, Profinet, EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, CANopen, Modbus TCP. Safe Torque Off (STO) is available as a standard safety function. If you're specifying drives for a general manufacturing plant, the FC302 is the one-size-fits-most answer.
- Power range: 0.37–1.4 MW
- Key features: VVC+ (Danfoss vector control), STO, all major fieldbuses, constant and variable torque mode, PTC motor thermistor input
- Best for: conveyors, mixers, compressors, general machinery, anywhere fieldbus is needed
- Not ideal for: cost-sensitive simple pump/fan applications where FC51 or FC102 suffices
| Series | Application Focus | Key Differentiator | Max Power |
|---|---|---|---|
| FC51 | General fan/pump, OEM | Lowest cost | 22 kW |
| FC102 | HVAC building services | BACnet, fire mode, energy optimisation | 90 kW |
| FC202 | Water & wastewater | Dry-run, end-of-curve, degassing | 1.4 MW |
| FC302 | General industrial | Flux vector, all fieldbuses, STO, full feature set | 1.4 MW |
